The Aberdeen American News won six awards in the South Dakota Newspaper Association 2010 contest.

    Two of the awards were firsts, one was a second and three were thirds.

   Elissa Dickey won one of the firsts in the Best Feature Story competition for her “Surviving Apart” story. The judge commented: “A heartbreaking story told well, with feeling. Great work!”

     Ryan Deal took the other first for Best Sports Photo for his “Cougers tripped up” picture. The judge commented: “Nice action through the glass. Not always the easiest shot.”

    The second place went to the American News in the Best Typography and Design competition. The judge commented: “Nice formatted design.”

    The three third place winners were:

    --John Davis in the Best Sports Photo category for his “Volley celebration” picture. The judge commented: “Solid reaction shot.”

    --Carrie Cole and Digital Media in the Best Newspaper Web Site category.

    --American News in the General Excellence category. The judge commented: “This newspaper should be proud of itself.”

    Staff member Jeff Natalie-Lees won two awards for his work while at the Grant County Review. He won a first in the Best Feature category for his “Local homeless man gets a second chance” story and took a third place in the Best News Series category for his “Burglary Attempts”  and “Jury finds MN man guilty” stories.
