The Bloomington, Ind. Herald-Times sports staff won seven awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors’ annual contest.
     The awards were announced in February at the AP Sports Editors annual meeting in Indianapolis.
     The contest attracted the cream of the crop in sports coverage from throughout the nation.
     “This is a good measuring stick for how we stack up with our peers nationally,” Herald-Times Editor Bob Zaltsberg commented. “I do not believe any other newspaper in our circulation category – or any circulation category - won as many awards as The Herald-Times.”
      The Herald-Times competed in the circulation category for newspapers 30,000 circulation and under. Judges selected the top 10 entries in each of the contest categories.
     Herald-Times photographer Chris Howell’s entry in the multi-media category for websites with under two million unique visitors finished in the top five.  His entry was a series of videos on the Bloomington High School South boys basketball team.
     The other Top Ten designations went to:
      --The Herald-Times in the daily section category;
      --The Herald-Times in the Sunday section category;
      --Dustin Dopirak in the breaking news category for his story on the firing of Indiana University football coach Bill Lynch. Dopirak’s initial tweet breaking the news and updates on Hoosier Scoop were taken into account.;
      --Hugh Kellenberger in the column writing category;
     --Jeremy Price in the explanatory story category for his piece on ACL injuries to high school athletes; and
     --Herald Times Online in the sports website category with under 500,000 unique visitors.
