Larry Vaught

Larry Vaught, longtime sports editor for The Danville, KY Advocate-Messenger, has been named Kentucky Sportswriter of the Year for 2010 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

This marks the fifth consecutive year Vaught has earned that honor, and the sixth time overall.

Vaught, a 1970 graduate of Danville High School and 1974 graduate of the University of Kentucky, began his career at The Advocate-Messenger on a full-time basis in January 1975 as a sports writer under his late father, longtime sports editor Bill Vaught. He served as assistant sports editor from 1978 to 1996 when he became sports editor upon the death of his father.

Vaught has served as president of the Kentucky Sports Writers Association and third vice president of the national Associated Press Sports Editors association.

He was inducted into the Danville Schools Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008 and also named a Danville High School Distinguished Alumni in 2009. He was also named to the 12th Region Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010.

Each spring, the Sportscasters and Sportswriter of the Year and the Hall of Famers are honored during NSSA’s Awards Weekend, which culminates in the Awards Banquet and Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
