Deb Smith of the Aberdeen (S.D.) American News has been named the Sportswriter of the Year by the South Dakota High School Coaches Association.
She is the third person on the American News staff to win the award, Dave Vilhauer and Ron Feickert are former winners.
The oldest of six children, Deb’s involvement in athletics can trace its roots back to a rural farm near the tiny town of Villard, Minn., where the family played softball in the front yard.
Almost every job Deb has ever held involved athletics. Her first one was teaching swimming lessons. The University of Minnesota-Morris graduate taught and coached for seven years, and eventually changed her career to journalism. She spent 15 years as the sports information director at Northern State University in Aberdeen and the last 13 years as a reporter at the American News. Deb has earned several awards and special honors during her career at the newspaper.
