The Paper
Founded: The first issue of the Imperial Valley Press, titled only Imperial Press, was printed on April 20, 1901 as a weekly local newspaper in Imperial, California. It was financed by W.F. Holt who brought in Henry C. Reed as it's first editor and publisher.
In 1906 Holt moved the newspaper to El Centro and renamed it the Imperial Valley Press.
In 1948, Virgil Pinkley, a well-known United Press International foreign correspondent during World War II, purchased the Press. In addition to the Imperial Valley Press, he also purchased the Brawley News and other publications. He had an assortment of financial backers including Franklin D. Schurz, then publisher of the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune.
